THE CASALEª TYPEFACE
This typeface has a rich history for printing masterworks from the 18th to the 20th centuries. It is finally available to you for the first time.
Back in the 1750s and 60s, Bodoni started his career in Rome, then came under the patronage of the Duke Ferdinand of Parma. For the Duke he printed books and brochures for special events at the Duke's Estate.
"Stop wasting your talent on brochures and flyers," was the thought of many of Bodoni's contemporaries. After much begging by Jos Nicols de Azara the Spanish ambassador to Rome, Bodoni finally printed his first classical work in LatinÑHoratii Opera, the Works of Horace.
For the book, Bodoni designed an early version of the Casale typeface.
Later the greatest printer of the 20th centuryÑGiovanni MardersteigÑrecast the Casale type in 1922 from the original punches and matrices, meaning he poured liquid metal in Bodoni's handcarved indents to make the type. Mardersteig's publishing house, Officina Bodoni, printed many fine editions, worth hundreds and thousands, and prized by rare books collectors.
For the first time this typeface is available digitallyÑpainstakingly crafted from hi-res scans of 4 sources. An authentic and beautiful font true to the Original Master's Intentions.
Released on the 201st anniversary of Bodoni's Manuale Tipografico, 1818.
SIZE: Original design was an "ascendonica" size, meaning about 22 modern points. When you set the font size to 20, it appears at Bodoni's original size.
USE: With thicker strokes than most digital Bodonis, Casale is suitable for text settings, down to 12 points, or for subheaders, where the beautiful curves of Bodoni's designs are more visible.
