Trio Grotesk is Florian SchickÕs personal interpretation of an almost forgotten typeface. / It all started when he was still a student at the Type & Media course in The Hague. During a visit to the Meermanno Museum, a promotional booklet designed around 1930 by the famous Dutch designer Piet Zwart for the printing office of Drukkerij Trio immediately caught his attention. Zwart wrote an accompanying text for this booklet about the principles of ÒNew TypographyÓ and the controversial nature of this subject caused the publication never to see the light of day. Florian, being struck by the historical value of this booklet, decided to revive its main typeface instantly. / Research revealed that this grotesk, called Kaart Antieke, was published in early 20th century by the Lettergieterij Amsterdam foundry. Florian enlarged and examined the original 7 point printed typeface in great detail and tried to replicate the image of this typeface as accurately as possible. Certain features which are unique to letterpress printing, such as roundings caused by ink spread, have been preserved. These details lend Trio Grotesk a friendly appearance. / To bring Trio Grotesk to the 21st century it comes equiped with all the bell and whistles that one might expect today. Trio Grotesk comes in three weights, sports a Latin extended character set and includes small caps, seven ranges of figures, and various arrows and dingbats. |
