Long before Jan Tschichold developed the Sabon typeface, he created a number of designs for various European typefoundries. During the late-1920s and the 1930s, some of these would be released, while others would not enter the market, for one reason or another. A prime example of an unreleased Tschichold typeface is a stencil motif that he created in 1929. In 2008, Klaus Sutter took it upon himself to digitize this piece and update it for the 21st century. The result is Linotype's Iwan Stencil. Why the name Iwan? For a time during the mid-1920s, Jan Tschichold went by the name " Iwan" (the German spelling of "Ivan"). |
