The first weight of the Oz Handicraftª typeface family was released into the Bitstream type library in 1989. Drawn by George Ryan, it is based on the hand lettering of early 20th century lettering artist and type designer, Oswald Cooper. While Cooper is best know for his emblematic Cooper Blackª typeface and several other serif type styles, he never designed a sans serif typeface.
Ryan saw a san serif example of CooperÕs lettering in ÒThe Book of Oz Cooper,Ó an homage to the man and his work, published 9 years after his death. The first weight Ryan drew, closely matches the slender and condensed proportions of the lettering. In 2016, an enlarged family was released that Ryan had been developing for some time. This included new light, semi bold and bold weights to complement the original design, and a matching suite of four ÒwideÓ designs, which are closer to normal proportions. Fonts of Oz Handicraft include a Pan-European character set that supports most Central European and many Eastern European languages. While it contains no italic designs, the distinctive family is still ideal for a wide range of print and interactive projects. |
