Some typophiles trace the heritage of the ITC Avant Garde Gothic® family to the geometric sans serif typefaces produced by Bauhaus designers in the mid-1920s. Actually, the design has its foundation in the first sanserif ever produced: a cap-only face issued by the Caslon Type Foundry in 1816. The characters in this design set the standard for the basic geometric shapes, found not only in ITC Avant Garde Gothic but also in virtually every geometric sans serif produced since 1816.
A single weight, cap-only version of ITC Avant Garde Gothic was first created for Avant Garde magazine in the late 1960s. In the early 1970s, a lowercase and additional weights were drawn and the resulting family became was one of the first text and display typeface designs released by ITC. ITC Avant Garde Gothic continues to build its legacy as the 19th typeface on last month's Top 100 Web Fonts list.
