Shirley Tucker worked as a book cover designer at Faber and Faber – alongside Berthold Wolpe – from the late-1950s until the 1980s. She was responsible for countless classic modernist jacket designs, including, perhaps most famously, the original 1966 edition of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar."
From a video interview with Tucker: "I suppose it was a doodle that turned into a jacket. As far as I know, I'm not acknowledged as the designer because at Faber's the designers were never credited in their jackets or covers. And it's only in recent years I think it's emerged that I did it. And I'm very proud of it now."
